A hypothetical fixation system capable of extending foveation in congenital nystagmus.

چکیده
Good visual acuity in the presence of the high-velocity oscillations of pendular nystagmus requires that the ocular motor system be capable of reliable and repeat able foveation of the target. The ability of the ocular motor system to acquire a tar get, despite these ongoing oscillations, requires seamless interaction between the smooth pursuit (SP) and saccadic subsystems. In a previous modell we proposed that this cooperation is mediated by the "internal monitor" (1M), a hypothetical grouping of functions that calculates the necessary control signals based on efference copy of position and velocity commands issued by the ocular motor system (OMS). Here we extend this model, adding the ability to extend foveation duration beyond the period of low-velocity motion that occurs naturally at the reversal of eye direction during pegdular waveforms,

Foveation period and waveforms of congenital ocular nystagmus.
Normal visual acuity requires a stationary retinal image on the fovea. If fixation instabilities cause movement of the retinal image across the fovea for a few degrees, visual acuity is diminished. Nystagmus as the fixation instability, consequently, may impair vision. Period of foveation is the area in the wave form, i.e. a brief period of time when the eye is still and is pointed at the objec...
متن کاملThe effects of increased visual task demand on foveation in congenital nystagmus
Commonly, when an individual with congenital nystagmus (CN) performs a visually demanding task their nystagmus intensifies and their visual acuity decreases, probably due to poorer foveation. However, the relationship between fixation attempt and nystagmus waveform has never been quantified. In this study 14 CN subjects viewed a Landolt C of varying orientation and size. They indicated its orie...
متن کاملCongenital nystagmus: hypotheses for its genesis and complex waveforms within a behavioral ocular motor system model.
Attempts to simulate dysfunction within ocular motor system (OMS) models capable of exhibiting known ocular motor behavior have provided valuable insight into the structure of the OMS required for normal visual function. The pendular waveforms of congenital nystagmus (CN) appear to be quite complex, composed of a sustained sinusoidal oscillation punctuated by braking saccades and foveating sacc...
متن کاملChanges in waveform of congenital nystagmus associated with biofeedback treatment.
A study was made of parameters of congenital nystagmus which responded to auditory biofeedback treatment. The parameters studied included foveation time, amplitude, and frequency. The patient's right retina was observed with an infrared television fundus camera, and the fundus image was recorded on video tape. The position of the eye during nystagmus, observed via the fundus camera and recorded...
متن کاملEog Baseline Oscillations in Congenital Nystagmus
Visual acuity in congenital nystagmus is primarily related to the duration of the foveation periods, during which the image of the target is placed on the fovea area and the eye velocity is low. This is true only if the subject is still able to place the target image on the centralmost fovea during the foveation period. In presence of a high variability of the foveation position the target imag...
